Cryptocurrencies were once viewed as a fringe experiment, largely ignored by mainstream investors. Today, however, digital assets have moved into the centre of serious financial discussions. For centuries, precious metals have served as the default store of value during times of economic uncertainty. Raj Karkara, COO of ZebPay, emphasises that the comparison should not be framed as a competition for replacement.

"Crypto and precious metals are fundamentally different asset classes, each serving a distinct role within an investor's portfolio," he explains.

According to Karkara, cryptocurrencies were never designed to replace gold or silver but to offer a decentralised digital alternative that enables trustless transactions and portfolio diversification.

He highlights Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins as a defining feature of its scarcity-driven design.

"Rather than viewing crypto as a replacement, it's more appropriate to see it as a complementary evolution in how value can be stored and transferred in a digital-first world," Karkara adds.

Volatility and the Modern Investor

While gold and silver have long been considered stable assets, they are not immune to price fluctuations. Market cycles, geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic shifts continue to influence precious metal prices.

In parallel, cryptocurrencies — despite their reputation for volatility — are increasingly being viewed through a broader lens. Some investors argue that, even amid price swings in traditional assets, digital alternatives may offer new forms of resilience and opportunity.

Particular attention is being drawn to crypto assets backed by real-world value. Gold-backed crypto stablecoins, for instance, combine the historical trust of precious metals with the efficiency and accessibility of blockchain technology. These instruments aim to reduce extreme volatility while retaining the advantages of digital transferability.

For many market participants, this hybrid approach represents an emerging middle ground — merging traditional stores of value with modern financial infrastructure.
